The induction served as a tribute to a couple who, despite not being Bishop Noll graduates themselves, became quintessential examples of the Warrior spirit through sharing their professional expertise and personal dedication.
Nancy Quinn’s impact began in 1991 when she began her 21-year tenure as “math teacher extraordinaire,” eventually serving as the department head, Mullaney said.
“Whether she was teaching freshman geometry or senior calculus, Mrs. Quinn was known for maintaining a firm, disciplined environment without ever needing to raise her voice,” he said. She was celebrated not just for teaching math, but for teaching students how to think critically.
Beyond the curriculum, Nancy became a beloved figure for her "eloquently crafted, albeit a little bit corny" math jokes and her role as the "Queen of Pi Day," an annual tradition on March 14 that raised funds through pie sales.
The Quinn family’s service extended to the school’s financial and strategic future through Terry Quinn. Following Nancy’s retirement from teaching, Terry was recruited to the Bishop Noll Foundation, where he served for 11 years.
A Purdue University economics graduate with a law degree from Notre Dame, Terry utilized his extensive background in the banking industry to benefit BNI. His tenure on the Foundation was marked by a keen understanding of investments and a disciplined approach to numbers — a skill set many joked had rubbed off on him from Nancy. Terry stepped down from his position in the spring to enjoy a well-earned retirement alongside his wife.
Upon receiving the award, Terry said, “No. 1, I know all the math jokes.”
He then thanked Nancy for “keeping me for 53 years.”
The Quinns also were recognized for their constant presence at extracurricular events. Mullaney noted that the couple was frequently seen traveling hours to support Warrior athletic teams in state tournaments or attending school performances to cheer on student artists.
The surprise nature of the induction was intentional, as Mullaney said the couple’s characteristic humility might have led them to decline the spotlight. However, their attendance at the gala provided the perfect opportunity for the community to offer a standing ovation for their decades of selfless investment at Bishop Noll.
Nancy ended the presentation by saying, “I don’t have a math joke, but I do want to tell you about a sign I saw as I was looking for a job ... It said, ‘Catholic schools, the answers to a teacher’s prayer.’ Bishop Noll was an answer to my prayer. Thank you."
