As of today, Bishop Noll Institute has completed its first week of classes at 1519 Hoffman St. We have welcomed the class of 2011 to the Noll family; our returning students have once again filled the halls with laughter and smiles and continue their journey in their academic careers. Our seniors have started counting down the days until graduation and the faculty and staff at Noll is looking forward to another year of growth as we continue to look towards the future. It's great to see our current students making their own memories and leaving their mark in the classrooms, on the athletic field, on the stage and in our hearts.

The BNI Parent's Club helped kick off the school year with the annual back-to-school picnic. The event organized by Parent's Club President, Anna Howard and her committee of dedicated volunteers executed a well-planned and well attended event. Students and families were treated to a full meal of hot dogs, hamburgers and all the extras on the Noll campus. Students had the opportunity to reconnect after the summer months. Parents had a chance to meet other parents. The dedication of Noll families is remarkable. Not only do our parents make tremendous sacrifices to provide quality education for their children but they are also very much invested in their children's education.

During the first days of school some students shared with me their summer accomplishments, an array of events that continue to showcase the talent of the Noll community.

Noll's Dance Team coached by Science teacher and alum Rebecca Dostatni '00 and Alexis West competed this summer at Universal Dance Association Summer Dance Camp at Purdue University in West Lafayette. The team came away with spirit sticks, rock star awards and the superior trophy award. Team Captain Senior Venus Serrano of Hammond received the all-star award and qualified to compete in Paris during Christmas break. Serrano’s qualification for Paris was based on her showmanship and choreography style in pom, hip-hop and jazz. Serrano said she is excited and hopes to travel to Paris.

Senior Terrell Franklin and Junior Ian O'Boyle competed in track and field events at the Junior Olympics this summer in Knoxville, TN. Franklin of Gary, has been involved in track and field for nine years, ran the 4x400, 4x100 and long jump. Franklin's goal is to run the 100 meter dash in the national championship next year. O'Boyle of Calumet City competed in the 800 and 1500 meter run and the 4x800 meter relay. O'Boyle has been involved in track and field for six years and in cross country the past four years. O'Boyle’s goal for the future is to make semi-state for cross country and state finals in track and field competitions.

Senior Beth Mikolajczyk of Dyer has been selected by the Indiana High School Athletic Association as a role model for anti-tobacco awareness. Mikolajczyk said she feels honored to be the selected the Noll representative in the fight for this noteworthy cause. Mikolajczyk will be featured on posters throughout the region communicating her stance on this important topic facing our youth.

School pride has taken center stage again with the return of "Noll Warrior Nation" comprised of a group of students who attend athletic events donning Noll shirts, hats and blue and gold face paint. These students cheer on fellow classmates during athletic events promoting Noll pride on the field.

New challenges in the academic arena, on the athletic field and in the individual growth of each student are just some of the many dynamics that push the Noll Spirit forward toward continued success.
